America is the second of 4 sculptures at the facade of the US Customs House (aka the Museum of the American Indian), in Lower Manhattan, NYC. The sculptures represent a view of the "4" Continents: Asia, America, Europe, and Africa, during the early 20th century, according to American Sculptor: Daniel Chester French (1850-1931). The man represents 'Labor', and he is pushing 'The Wheel' of Progress. On America's right knee there are sheaves of corn, symbolizing 'The American Idea of Plenty'. 'Continents' is considered by experts as the most beautiful work done by an American sculptor.
